Insect Sterol Nutrition and Physiology: A Global Overview
نویسندگان
چکیده
Unlike most animals, insects lack the capacity to synthesize sterols that are required in lipid biostructures, as precursors to important steroid hormones and as regulators of developmental processes. Therefore insects must acquire sterols from their diet. Hundreds of different sterols have been identified and the review starts by documenting the occurrence of sterols in different insect foods. Next we look at the various nutritional and biochemical studies that have been conducted, and organize them according to insect relatedness, which allows insect sterol use and metabolic capabilities to be viewed from an evolutionary perspective. How sterol structure influences insect feeding behavior is ADVANCES IN INSECT PHYSIOLOGY VOL. 31 Copyright # 2003 Elsevier Ltd ISBN 0-12-024231-1 All rights of reproduction in any form reserved DOI: 10.1016/S0065-2806(03)31001-X examined, and the fate of sterols once they have been ingested, including the processes of absorption and transport, their distribution in different tissues, and their role in reproduction, is detailed. The extent to which sterols may influence ecological outcomes is also considered, especially in phytophagous insects with known sterol metabolic constraints. Finally, mention is made of the potential use of exploiting insect sterol requirements and constraints for pest control, as well as the ability of insects to adapt to the presence of novel sterols in their diet.

Plant phloem sterol content: forms, putative functions, and implications for phloem-feeding insects
All eukaryotes contain sterols, which serve as structural components in cell membranes, and as precursors for important hormones. Plant vegetative tissues are known to contain mixtures of sterols, but very little is known about the sterol composition of phloem. Plants are food for many animals, but plant-feeding arthropods (including phloem-feeding insets) are unique among animals in that they ...
متن کاملThe Effect of Medicinal Plants as a Feed Additive in Ruminant Nutrition
Since the use of antibiotics in animal feeds has been banned, researches on alternative natural products that modulate ruminal fermentation have been intensified. Natural compounds such as plant extracts have been considered to be replaced antibiotics as safe and sustainable alternatives. Plant extracts especially essential oils and saponins have strong antimicrobial, antiparasitic, antiprotozo...
متن کاملFood Losses and Waste: A Global Overview with a Focus on Near East and North Africa Region
Food losses refer to edible food mass decrease throughout the human food chain. Food losses occurring at consumption stage are called food waste. Food Losses and Waste (FLW) represent one of the most critical social, economic and ecological challenges facing humanity, besides being also an ethical issue. FAO data show that roughly one-third of food produced for human consumption is lost or wast...
متن کاملQuantification of Sterol Contents in Almond (PrunusamygdalusL.) Oils
In this study, the sterol contents of almond kernel oils collected from naturally growing almond trees in Mersin province were determined. Generally, the sterol contents of almond oil samples varied depending on almond types. The major sterols in almond oils wereß-sitosterol, 5-avenasterol and campesterol, followed by 5,24-stigmastadienol, stigmasterol, sitostanol, and cholesterol. W...

A Tortricidae (Lobesia botrana) has a mutualistic relationship with the fungus (Botrytis cinerea). In this study, we investigated the growth, survival, fecundity and amount of sterols and steroids in larvae of this vineyard pest reared on artificial diets containing mycelium (3%) or purified sterols (0.01%) of the phytopathogenic fungus. Two principal questions related to the physiological and ...
